Hyundai Finishes Strong in J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

Hyundai Ranks as 2nd Highest Non-Luxury Brand

When it comes to reliability, Hyundai has been making some waves. In fact, the power industry group J.D. Power has ranked Hyundai high on its latest Initial Quality Study. In addition to great design, performance, and value, Hyundai is now offering another reason for drivers to get behind the wheel of a Sonata, Santa Fe or Palisade.

What Did This Study Find?

The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study takes a look at a vehicle's overall reliability during the first 90 days of vehicle ownership. Ranking factors include factory defects, fit, finish and other reliability factors. In the 2019 ranking, Hyundai finished third ahead of competitors Toyota and Honda. Hyundai also finished ahead of just about every luxury brand including BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus.

The top performer for the Hyundai brand was the popular Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. Finishing in the top three for small SUVs were the Hyundai Tucson and the Hyundai Kona. In fact, all three brands from the Hyundai Group - Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis - finished in the top three of the 2019 J.D. Power Initial Quality Rankings.

How Are Vehicles Selected?

The 2019 Initial Quality Study is based on over 76,000 new vehicles purchases from all major vehicles brands sold in North America based on the first 90 days of ownership. The study is composed of 233 questions across 8 vehicle categories. Since 1968, J.D. Power has been the leading consumer insights, data, and analytics. Among the data collected by J.D.
