Hyundai Smart Key

The Hyundai Smart Key fob is a feature on many models. When you're away from your Hyundai, you'll be able to lock your doors remotely, unlock them, and start your vehicle up ahead of your arrival. There is even a panic button that can save you in an emergency. After you learn how to use your smart key, there may come a time when your vehicle isn't recognizing this technology. A little bit of troubleshooting can get everything functioning again.

Hyundai Smart Key Fob Not Detected

There could be several reasons why a Hyundai key fob is not detected by your car. Something as simple as a dead battery in your smart key might be the problem. After you replace the battery, you'll be able to determine if that was the issue. Replacing your battery involves a few easy steps.

  1. Pry off the battery cover on the back of your smart key fob.
  2. Place the new battery with the + symbol facing up inside the compartment
  3. Replace the battery cover.

If your Hyundai key fob is not working after battery change, check that the battery contacts are clean and the battery is seated properly.

Keep in mind that you can start your vehicle without a key fob, even with a dead battery. Each Hyundai model that is equipped with a Smart Key has a holder location. Usually, it is in the center console or the glove compartment. If you insert your key into that area, you'll be able to start your vehicle and operate your Smart Key Fob.

Model-specific key locations may vary:

  • Hyundai Tucson key not detected: Check the holder in the center console
  • Hyundai Sonata key not detected: Look for the key slot near the cup holders
  • Hyundai Santa Fe key not detected: The holder may be in the lower dashboard area
  • Hyundai Kona key not detected: Try placing the key in the designated slot on the steering column

If your smart key problems persist, your key may not work properly if:

  • It's near radio transmitters or other electronic devices
  • Another vehicle's smart key is being operated nearby
  • Your vehicle battery is low
  • You need to program your Hyundai keyless remote again

In emergency situations, remember the Hyundai emergency key hidden inside your smart key fob can be used to manually unlock doors when electronics fail.

If you're concerned about losing power to your Smart Key because of a dead battery, you could choose to keep a few extras around. It's also important to know where to check the key location for your model, so you should also know where your other holder's location is. Occasionally, not everybody is aware of what needs to be done if a Smart Key isn't working properly. You can always reach out to Van Hyundai's technicians if you would like assistance with your Smart Key.
