If you think that your car smells strange, it might not just be your imagination. One of the ways your vehicle can indicate that something is wrong is by producing unusual smells. Some smells can be attributed to minor issues, while others can warrant an auto technician's attention and possibly repairs. Here we provide some insight on some problems to consider if your car doesn't smell right.
Burned Rubber
A possible cause of the burned rubber smell is an issue with the brakes or brake pads. The brake pads will typically start to smell like burning rubber when they wear out or overheat. Problems with the engine can also cause a burning rubber smell. When oil leaks out from the engine, it can produce this smell as it hits the exhaust pipe.
Gym Clothes
The smell of musty gym clothes can signal a problem in the A/C system. The A/C system can develop mold and mildew in the moisture condensing inside the A/C evaporator, causing your car to smell. The A/C system will need to be cleaned out or aired out to get rid of the smell. Try airing it out by circulating fresh air through the fan rather than the A/C, drying out the moisture.
Burned Carpet
The smell of burned carpet can also be caused by the brakes. The brake pads can also start to smell like burning carpet when they don't have enough protective material left. This can cause excess heat and a burning smell.
Syrup
A sweet maple syrup smell signals a necessary trip to the mechanic. This problem may be caused by a leak in the coolant fluid reservoir. The coolant containing ethylene glycol can start leaking from several sources, such as the radiator, a failed intake manifold gasket or cylinder head.
Sulfur or Rotten Eggs
This unpleasant smell can be due to an issue with the catalytic converter or the engine. The catalytic converter may be failing to convert air and gases in the exhaust system, which in turn produces a foul odor. The sulfur smell can also be caused by an engine that's not working properly.
