When Should You Replace Your Windshield Wiper Blades?

Everyone who has ever had to drive through heavy rain or snow knows how important windshield wipers are, but how often should they be replaced? Technically, the rule is that you need new wipers every six to 12 months, but since that is such a large window of time, you're better off monitoring your windshield wipers closely and replacing them as needed.

First of all, check your rubber wiper blades at least once a month. If they are rough to the touch or have visible cracks and gouges, it's probably time to get new windshield wipers.

Make sure to look at the windshield itself when you use your wipers. If the wipers are leaving streaks behind, they're approaching the end of their lifespan. They should be replaced before the streaks in your windshield start to impair your vision when you drive.

It would help if you also listened to your windshield wipers when you use them. Healthy windshield wipers should be all but silent. Meanwhile, older or damaged wipers might make a loud squeaking or squealing sound. Not only is this a sign that your wipers should be replaced, but being forced to listen to what amounts to nails on a chalkboard is bound to give you a nasty headache.

Check the metal arms and joints of your windshield wipers when you look at the rubber blades. If they are rusty or corroded, they should be replaced. They won't exactly impair your vision during your drive, but they could break off, and you don't want that to happen on a highway during a thunderstorm.
