Hyundai showed up to the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show with a secret gadget in tow: the IONIQ Scooter. Introduced as a portable-mobility concept, the scooter was developed as a part of the company’s research and development program, Project IONIQ, which aims to redefine future mobility.

Designed to fit right inside the front door of the upcoming Hyundai IONIQ Electric, the IONIQ Scooter can be used as a way for drivers to easily continue on to their destination after parking their vehicle. Electrically-powered, the lightweight scooter charges while it sits in the front door, and can be simply removed and unfolded with just one hand once the IONIQ comes to a stop.

When using the scooter, sensors are used to detect when the rider is onboard. A thumb switch is then utilized to accelerate or decelerate by scrolling up or down. Braking can also be carried out by pressing down on a pad over the rear wheel. Additionally, the IONIQ Scooter features front and rear lights for safety.

“Hyundai Motor takes pride in finding innovative solutions to make the lives of our customers as easy as possible, so developing concepts like the IONIQ Scooter is at the core of our forward-looking R&D program, Project IONIQ. As we look ahead, our vision is to be a world leader in hyper-connected living and to offer our customers seamless, end-to-end transport solutions.”
