Hyundai first started developing electric vehicles in 1991 with the Sonata Electric Vehicle. This was a concept vehicle based on the Sonata sedan that had a top speed of 37 miles per hour and an all-electric range of 44 miles.
During the next several years, Hyundai continued to develop new electric vehicles that improved on the Sonata Electric Vehicle. Each electric vehicle that was developed throughout the 1990s had higher top speeds and ranges, with its greatest advancement coming in 1995 with the Accent EV concept. This car had a range of 242 miles and a top speed of 87 miles per hour.
Hyundai's first production electric car was the BlueOn, which saw a limited production in 2010. After a test run of 30 vehicles for government agencies in South Korea, 2,500 units were produced in 2012 for the South Korean market. The BlueOn was an electric version of the i10, and it had a top speed of 81 miles per hour and a range of 87 miles.
Hyundai now provides the largest range of electric vehicles on the market. It is already on its second generation of electric vehicles with its IONIQ line, and it continues to make strides towards producing viable and affordable electric and hybrid vehicles.
